We are very pleased to announce that Deputy Chief Steve Young has been selected as the next Fire Chief for the Town of Cape Elizabeth!

After an extensive, nationwide search, the hiring committee narrowed the pool to 3 applicants who were interviewed. Town Manager Matt Sturgis announced today that Deputy Chief Young will take over effective July 1st, following current Chief Peter Gleeson’s retirement on June 30th (after 47 years of service).

Chief Young started with CEFD on Engine Co 2 when he was 16 years old in 1982. In 1985, Steve was promoted to Lieutenant of Engine Co 2, where he remained a lieutenant until he was promoted to Deputy Chief in 2009. Steve has served the Town of Cape Elizabeth for over 40 years, holding many positions including Firefighter, Lieutenant, Deputy Chief, as well as Bus Driver and Transportation Director for the school department. Chief Young was also a full-time firefighter for the Portland Fire Department for 28 years, retiring in 2014.

Chief Young will be sworn in to his new position on June 30th, while the department also celebrates Chief Gleeson’s retirement. Please join us in congratulating Chief Young!
